Student Behind the Books

Key Stage 1 Maths - Years 1 & 2

This Key Stage is where children’s educational development really begins as their cognitive abilities are explored, developed and put to the test.

Children in Key Stage 1 learn about Maths in a very practical hands-on way using everyday objects to do simple calculations and solve problems. How can we help? We provide specific and personalised learning plans for each student to help them fill he gaps in their knowledge and build the confidence to rise to any challenges! Our Maths classes are very engaging for little learners to boost their interest in the subject and to ensure that they become confident mathematicians!

What we cover in our Key Stage 1 Maths Programme:

•            Numbers (count to 100)

•            Place Value

•            Addition and Subtraction (Number patterns)

•            Times Tables- 2, 5 and 10 and Division

•            Basic fractions

•            Measurement- standard units

•            Reading analogue clock, write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour

•            Geometry- Properties of shapes, position and direction

•            Statistics- Data analysis and Problem Solving

Lower KS2 Maths - Years 3 & 4

In the lower KS2 Maths curriculum, the main focus is to ensure that students become confident with the four operations which include concepts of place value. At this stage, students start to develop their ability to solve a range of word problems where they can apply mathematical methods taught at school. At House of Learning, we would ensure that students are taught how to improve their accuracy in mathematical reasoning and analysis so that they can confidently describe and make connections with overlapping mathematical concepts.

Upper KS2 Maths - Years 5 & 6
In the upper KS2 Maths curriculum, the main focus is to ensure that student are extending their understanding of numbers and place value. The connections between different topics taught in lower KS2 (e.g. multiplication and division with fractions and ratio) should be developed in this stage by encouraging students to solve a wider range of problems with increasing difficulty. As efficiency in written and mental methods of calculation is developed, students are introduced to algebra for the first time in this phase. At House of Learning, we facilitate students to translate math word problems to form equations and solve them using different algebraic techniques. In Year 6, children complete the SATs tests in Arithmetic and Reasoning.

KS3 Maths- Years 7, 8 & 9
In this Key Stage, children will focus on becoming fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including reasoning and problem-solving. They will consolidate all their mathematical capability from KS2 and extend their understanding. The curriculum includes:
•    Number
•    Algebra
•    Ratio, proportion and rates of change
•    Geometry and measures
•    Probability
•    Statistics
At House of Learning, we believe in collaboration between students and teachers by sharing various ideas. There are many different approaches that teachers and students use to solve math problems, so we’d ensure that students develop their fluency by trying out different methods and understanding which suits them best. This technique helps students master concepts, topics and ultimately, master the subject of Mathematics! Our classes are super intensive and engaging, which also include regular challenges to stretch our students when we feel they are ready to push themselves! Please Note: All lessons are differentiated for every student to ensure learning is accessible to all the children, so students will also be able to monitor their own progress both academically and personally.
