KS1 English- Year 1 & Year 2

Reading:
In KS1, children will have a growing knowledge of phonics and build up a range of reading skills. In Year 1, a phonics screen check is taken at the end of the year, to make sure they are at the expected reading level. They begin to develop their comprehension skills as they become more confident readers. How can we help your child become confident and fluent young readers?
We help students in Year 1 to:
•    Use phonics skills to decode words
•    Blend sounds in words (reading separate letters in a word & put them together to read the whole word, e.g. ‘g’, ‘l’, ‘a’ and ‘d’, can blend together to read glad.
•    Read common exception words
•    Read words with contractions
•    Re-read books to build fluency
•    Learn well-known stories, fairy tales, and traditional tales
•    Talk about stories and ask open questions like ‘how’ & ‘why’.
•    Develop early reading skills by inferring what they think will happen next.

We help students in Year 2 to:
•    Use phonics to decode complex words
•    Blend & recognise alterative sounds for graphemes
•    Read words that use common suffixes
•    Read more ‘tricky’ words
•    Read most words quickly and accurately
•    Understand the books they read (predicting what might happen next
•    Answer comprehension questions to show their understanding of the texts

Writing:
Children in KS1 will be learning all the phenomes used in the English language. They will learn spelling rules, read stories and will begin to learn how to hold a pencil and write their own stories.
With our support, children will be able to confidently write sentences using the correct SPaG (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation). Children will learn how to tell stories orally, and then compose short sentences. These sentences will be put together into short narratives and children will regularly read back what they have written with peers and teachers! This technique not only makes children more confident in speaking, but also encourages them to explore their own ideas through creative writing and poetry.
